Limenstone rocks
Limestone rocks are a category of sedimentary rocks that have as their main component calcium carbonate. This type of rock is characterized by a porous structure that makes them permeable to water. Thanks to this characteristic, limestone rocks have given rise to the spectacular landscape that surrounds the settlement of Marsicovetere.
In the area of La Laura, limestone rocks have given rise to the Strabucco cave and other karst formations. The formation of these caves occurs through a chemical process of dissolution of limestone rocks by water. Rainwater, loaded with carbon dioxide, seeps into the porosity of the limestone rocks and, over time, dissolves the calcium carbonate present in the rock, forming underground cavities and galleries.
The Strabucco cave and other karst formations present in the La Laura area represent an important tourist and scientific resource, allowing visitors to admire up close the geological processes that have given rise to these extraordinary panoramas.
Alder
The Alder (Alnus glutinosa) is a plant belonging to the family Betulaceae and the genus Alnus. It is a deciduous tree that can reach a height of 20-30 meters and a trunk diameter of 50-60 cm. The bark of the Alder is gray-white and has a rough and wrinkled surface.
The leaves of the Alder are oval or elliptical in shape, about 6-10 cm long and 4-6 cm wide. They are dark green on the upper side and lighter on the lower side, with finely serrated margins.
The Alder is a plant that grows spontaneously near watercourses or on moist soils. Its roots are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen, thus contributing to soil enrichment.

Strabucco SinkHole is a geosite of great speleological interest, located in the southeast area of the La Laura karst basin. By serving as the main absorption point for surface waters, it feeds one of the most important springs in the entire Val d'Agri, the Peschiera Spring (with an average flow rate of 350 L/s). The cavity appears as an active underground meander with a small room that ends with two overlapping tunnels. The cave continues as a meander to a terminal siphon obstructed by debris and soil carried by meteoric waters.
Only experienced speleologists can visit the Strabucco cave, which offers a unique experience for anyone interested in geology and underground nature and is an unmissable stop for those visiting the Val d'Agri.

Il Cavallo (Equus ferus caballus) è un mammifero appartenente alla famiglia degli Equidi. Ha una massa corporea compresa tra i 380 e i 1000 kg, un'altezza al garrese tra 120 e 170 cm con un'aspettativa di vita che varia dai 20 ai 30 anni.
Il cavallo da pascolo si nutre principalmente di erba, fiori e arbusti, grazie a un sistema digestivo a base di fibre vegetali.
Il mantello del cavallo può essere di diverse tonalità, tra cui marrone scuro, nero, baio, grigio e bianco. La sua criniera e coda sono spesse e folte, utilizzate per regolare la temperatura corporea e come mezzo di comunicazione sociale.
Il cavallo da pascolo vive in gruppi sociali chiamati "branchi" e la sua organizzazione sociale è basata su una gerarchia di dominanza.

La Laura
Il nostro Virtual Tour ci porterà alla scoperta della zona sub-pianeggiante chiamata La Laura, situata nel nord-est del comune di Marsicovetere. Quest'area incontaminata è circondata dal versante Scarrone la Macchia e il Monte di Viggiano ed è caratterizzata da una vasta cavità carsica racchiusa da bordi rocciosi. In questa zona si sono sviluppate diverse forme di carsismo epigeo, tra cui l'importante geosito dell'inghiottitoio Strabucco.
La morfologia della zona è articolata ma presenta blande pendenze, rendendola particolarmente adatta per attività all'aria aperta come trekking ed escursioni.
Scoprire La Laura è un'esperienza unica e suggestiva: Le Laure nel cristianesimo orientale, denominavano un insediamento monastico di dimensioni ridotte e, viste le molteplici testimonianze della presenza di monaci italo-greci già a partire dall’ VIII secolo, si pensa che questa vallata immersa nella pace fosse luogo di preghiera e meditazione. Grazie alla tranquillità e l'armonia che la circondano, La Laura è un luogo ideale per chi desidera una pausa rigenerante dalla routine quotidiana.
La Laura
Our Virtual Tour will take us on a discovery of the sub-plain area called La Laura, located in the northeast of the municipality of Marsicovetere. This pristine area is surrounded by the slope Scarrone La Macchia and Monte di Viggiano, and is characterized by a vast karst cavity enclosed by rocky edges. Discovering La Laura is a unique and suggestive experience: in Eastern Christianity, the term "Laure" referred to a small-sized monastic settlement, and given the multiple testimonies of the presence of Italo-Greek monks starting from the 8th century, it is thought that this valley immersed in peace was a place of prayer and meditation. Thanks to the tranquility and harmony that surround it, La Laura is an ideal place for those who want a regenerating break from daily routine.
Nibbio Reale
Il Nibbio Reale, appartenente alla famiglia degli Accipitridi, è un rapace di grandi dimensioni che può raggiungere i 60 cm di lunghezza e un'apertura alare di 160 cm. Grazie alla sua coda biforcuta, è in grado di planare con grande facilità e vive principalmente nelle campagne di zone collinari e basso-montane. Il colore del piumaggio del nibbio reale varia dal bruno, al rosso scuro, al marrone chiaro. Gli individui più giovani presentano tonalità più chiare. Il ventre è particolarmente ricco di tonalità cromatiche, mentre sotto le ali si distingue un'ampia area bianca che crea un contrasto con l'apice, tendente al nero, e la base, che si divide tra le tonalità del grigio e del bruno. Il capo è grigiastro.
La Basilicata detiene il primato in Italia per il numero di nibbi reali presenti sul territorio. Attualmente, si stima che circa 700 esemplari di questa specie di rapace popolino la regione. La sua presenza in Basilicata rappresenta un valore inestimabile per la conservazione dell'ecosistema regionale, permettendo di mantenere un equilibrio naturale tra le varie specie che lo compongono.
Ontano
L'ontano ( Alnus glutinosa ) è una pianta appartenente alla famiglia delle Betulaceae e al genere Alnus.
Si tratta di un albero deciduo che può raggiungere un'altezza di 20-30 metri e un diametro del tronco di 50-60 cm. La corteccia dell'ontano è di colore grigio-bianco e presenta una superficie ruvida e rugosa.
Le foglie dell'ontano sono di forma ovale o ellittica, lunghe circa 6-10 cm e larghe 4-6 cm. Sono di colore verde scuro nella parte superiore e più chiare nella parte inferiore, con margini finemente dentellati.
L'ontano è una pianta che cresce spontaneamente in prossimità di corsi d'acqua o su terreni umidi. La sua radice è capace di fissare l'azoto atmosferico, contribuendo così all'arricchimento del suolo.
Red Kite
The Red Kite belonging to the Accipitridae family, is a large bird of prey that can reach up to 60 cm in length and has a wingspan of 160 cm. Thanks to its forked tail, it is able to glide with great ease and mainly lives in the countryside of hilly and low-mountain areas. The color of the Redl Kite's plumage varies from brown to dark red to light brown. Younger individuals have lighter shades. The belly is particularly rich in chromatic tones, while under the wings there is a large white area that creates a contrast with the apex, tending towards black, and the base, which is divided between shades of gray and brown. The head is grayish.
Basilicata holds the record in Italy for the number of Red Kites present in the area. Currently, it is estimated that about 700 specimens of this bird of prey inhabit the region. Its presence in Basilicata represents an invaluable value for the conservation of the regional ecosystem, allowing for the maintenance of a natural balance between the various species that compose it.
Resti ossei
La Piana de La Laura è un luogo unico e suggestivo, ricco di tesori naturalistici e paesaggistici. Tra questi, un tesoro prezioso sono i resti ossei di animali che si possono trovare disseminati in diverse aree della piana.
In particolare, le ossa di cavalli rappresentano una testimonianza importante della fauna che popola questi territori. Grazie al loro stato di conservazione, è possibile ammirare da vicino la struttura ossea di questi magnifici animali e comprendere meglio le loro caratteristiche anatomiche.
La presenza di queste ossa testimonia anche l'importanza della Piana de La Laura come area di pascolo per gli animali. Qui, i cavalli e altri animali selvatici trovano abbondante cibo e acqua, permettendo loro di vivere e prosperare in queste terre.
Rocce calcaree
Le rocce calcaree sono una categoria di rocce sedimentarie che presentano come principale costituente il carbonato di calcio. Questo tipo di roccia è caratterizzato da una struttura porosa che rende le rocce permeabili all'acqua. Grazie a questa loro caratteristica, le rocce calcaree hanno dato luogo alla formazione dello spettacolare paesaggio che fa da cornice all'insediamento di Marsicovetere.
Nell'area della Piana La Laura, le rocce calcaree hanno dato origine alla grotta Strabucco e ad altre forme di carsismo.
La formazione di queste grotte avviene attraverso un processo chimico di dissoluzione delle rocce calcaree ad opera dell'acqua. L'acqua piovana, carica di anidride carbonica, si insinua nella porosità delle rocce calcaree e, nel corso del tempo, scioglie il carbonato di calcio presente nella roccia, formando cavità e gallerie sotterranee.
La grotta Strabucco e le altre forme di carsismo presenti nell'area de La Laura rappresentano un'importante risorsa turistica e scientifica, consentendo ai visitatori di ammirare da vicino i processi geologici che hanno dato origine a questi straordinari panorami.

L'Inghiottitoio Strabucco è un geosito dal grande interesse speleologico, situato nella zona sud-est della conca carsica La Laura. Svolgendo la funzione di punto d'assorbimento principale delle acque superficiali, alimenta una delle sorgenti più importanti dell’intera Val d’Agri, la Sorgente Peschiera (portata media di 350 L/s). La cavità si presenta come un meandro ipogeo attivo con una piccola sala che termina con due cunicoli sovrapposti. La grotta prosegue come un meandro fino ad un sifone terminale ostruito da detriti e terra trasportati dalle acque meteoriche.
Visitabile solo da speleologi esperti, la grotta Strabucco offre un'esperienza unica per chiunque sia interessato alla geologia e alla natura sotterranea e rappresenta una tappa imperdibile per chi visita la Val d'Agri.

Discovering La Laura is a unique and suggestive experience: in Eastern Christianity, the term "Laure" referred to a small-sized monastic settlement, and given the multiple testimonies of the presence of Italo-Greek monks starting from the 8th century, it is thought that this valley immersed in peace was a place of prayer and meditation. La Laura
Il nostro Virtual Tour ci porterà alla scoperta della zona sub-pianeggiante chiamata La Laura, situata nel nord-est del comune di Marsicovetere. Quest'area incontaminata è circondata dal versante Scarrone la Macchia e il Monte di Viggiano ed è caratterizzata da una vasta cavità carsica racchiusa da bordi rocciosi. In questa zona si sono sviluppate diverse forme di carsismo epigeo, tra cui l'importante geosito dell'inghiottitoio Strabucco.
La morfologia della zona è articolata ma presenta blande pendenze, rendendola particolarmente adatta per attività all'aria aperta come trekking ed escursioni.
Scoprire La Laura è un'esperienza unica e suggestiva: Le Laure nel cristianesimo orientale, denominavano un insediamento monastico di dimensioni ridotte e, viste le molteplici testimonianze della presenza di monaci italo-greci già a partire dall’ VIII secolo, si pensa che questa vallata immersa nella pace fosse luogo di preghiera e meditazione. Grazie alla tranquillità e l'armonia che la circondano, La Laura è un luogo ideale per chi desidera una pausa rigenerante dalla routine quotidiana.
Nibbio Reale
Il Nibbio Reale, appartenente alla famiglia degli Accipitridi, è un rapace di grandi dimensioni che può raggiungere i 60 cm di lunghezza e un'apertura alare di 160 cm. Grazie alla sua coda biforcuta, è in grado di planare con grande facilità e vive principalmente nelle campagne di zone collinari e basso-montane. Il colore del piumaggio del nibbio reale varia dal bruno, al rosso scuro, al marrone chiaro. Gli individui più giovani presentano tonalità più chiare. Il ventre è particolarmente ricco di tonalità cromatiche, mentre sotto le ali si distingue un'ampia area bianca che crea un contrasto con l'apice, tendente al nero, e la base, che si divide tra le tonalità del grigio e del bruno. Il capo è grigiastro.
La Basilicata detiene il primato in Italia per il numero di nibbi reali presenti sul territorio. Attualmente, si stima che circa 700 esemplari di questa specie di rapace popolino la regione. La sua presenza in Basilicata rappresenta un valore inestimabile per la conservazione dell'ecosistema regionale, permettendo di mantenere un equilibrio naturale tra le varie specie che lo compongono.
Ontano
L'ontano ( Alnus glutinosa ) è una pianta appartenente alla famiglia delle Betulaceae e al genere Alnus.
Si tratta di un albero deciduo che può raggiungere un'altezza di 20-30 metri e un diametro del tronco di 50-60 cm. La corteccia dell'ontano è di colore grigio-bianco e presenta una superficie ruvida e rugosa.
Le foglie dell'ontano sono di forma ovale o ellittica, lunghe circa 6-10 cm e larghe 4-6 cm. Sono di colore verde scuro nella parte superiore e più chiare nella parte inferiore, con margini finemente dentellati.
L'ontano è una pianta che cresce spontaneamente in prossimità di corsi d'acqua o su terreni umidi. La sua radice è capace di fissare l'azoto atmosferico, contribuendo così all'arricchimento del suolo.
Red Kite
The Red Kite belonging to the Accipitridae family, is a large bird of prey that can reach up to 60 cm in length and has a wingspan of 160 cm. Thanks to its forked tail, it is able to glide with great ease and mainly lives in the countryside of hilly and low-mountain areas. The color of the Redl Kite's plumage varies from brown to dark red to light brown. Younger individuals have lighter shades. The belly is particularly rich in chromatic tones, while under the wings there is a large white area that creates a contrast with the apex, tending towards black, and the base, which is divided between shades of gray and brown. The head is grayish.
Basilicata holds the record in Italy for the number of Red Kites present in the area. Currently, it is estimated that about 700 specimens of this bird of prey inhabit the region. Its presence in Basilicata represents an invaluable value for the conservation of the regional ecosystem, allowing for the maintenance of a natural balance between the various species that compose it.
Resti ossei
La Piana de La Laura è un luogo unico e suggestivo, ricco di tesori naturalistici e paesaggistici. Tra questi, un tesoro prezioso sono i resti ossei di animali che si possono trovare disseminati in diverse aree della piana.
In particolare, le ossa di cavalli rappresentano una testimonianza importante della fauna che popola questi territori. Grazie al loro stato di conservazione, è possibile ammirare da vicino la struttura ossea di questi magnifici animali e comprendere meglio le loro caratteristiche anatomiche.
La presenza di queste ossa testimonia anche l'importanza della Piana de La Laura come area di pascolo per gli animali. Qui, i cavalli e altri animali selvatici trovano abbondante cibo e acqua, permettendo loro di vivere e prosperare in queste terre.
Rocce calcaree
Le rocce calcaree sono una categoria di rocce sedimentarie che presentano come principale costituente il carbonato di calcio. Questo tipo di roccia è caratterizzato da una struttura porosa che rende le rocce permeabili all'acqua. Grazie a questa loro caratteristica, le rocce calcaree hanno dato luogo alla formazione dello spettacolare paesaggio che fa da cornice all'insediamento di Marsicovetere.
Nell'area della Piana La Laura, le rocce calcaree hanno dato origine alla grotta Strabucco e ad altre forme di carsismo.
La formazione di queste grotte avviene attraverso un processo chimico di dissoluzione delle rocce calcaree ad opera dell'acqua. L'acqua piovana, carica di anidride carbonica, si insinua nella porosità delle rocce calcaree e, nel corso del tempo, scioglie il carbonato di calcio presente nella roccia, formando cavità e gallerie sotterranee.
La grotta Strabucco e le altre forme di carsismo presenti nell'area de La Laura rappresentano un'importante risorsa turistica e scientifica, consentendo ai visitatori di ammirare da vicino i processi geologici che hanno dato origine a questi straordinari panorami.

L'Inghiottitoio Strabucco è un geosito dal grande interesse speleologico, situato nella zona sud-est della conca carsica La Laura. Svolgendo la funzione di punto d'assorbimento principale delle acque superficiali, alimenta una delle sorgenti più importanti dell’intera Val d’Agri, la Sorgente Peschiera (portata media di 350 L/s). La cavità si presenta come un meandro ipogeo attivo con una piccola sala che termina con due cunicoli sovrapposti. La grotta prosegue come un meandro fino ad un sifone terminale ostruito da detriti e terra trasportati dalle acque meteoriche.
Visitabile solo da speleologi esperti, la grotta Strabucco offre un'esperienza unica per chiunque sia interessato alla geologia e alla natura sotterranea e rappresenta una tappa imperdibile per chi visita la Val d'Agri.
